Curriculum Renewal
During the period 2005 - 2007 all ACT schools, including Arawang, have been involved in reviewing and refining curriculum in the light of the Education Act 2004 and the government's Curriculum Renewal project. In 2008 we implement the new curriculum, with particular focus on English, Mathematics, Integrated Studies and Sustainablity.
Arawang has a balanced curriculum which emphasises developing individual skills and talents in the eight key learning areas (see below). The ACT Curriculum Framework, "Every Chance to Learn", details the Essential Learning Achievements for all school students. Click here to go to an information brochure about the Curriculum Framework.
Integrated Learning at Arawang Primary School
At Arawang Primary we use Integrated Learning as a form of teaching and learning (pedagogy). In this way we can include many aspects of the Key Learning Areas as set out below. For example a unit about students' family backgrounds may draw on aspects of Studies of Society and Environment, English, Technology and the Arts. Teachers plan units to include outcomes relevant and suitable to the ages and stages of students in their classes.
The Key Learning Areas
The Arts
The Arts consists of music, visual art, drama, dance and media. Arawang offers students opportunities to experience making, creating, performing and presenting, developing informed responses to art forms and studying the arts in past and present contexts.
English
The Literacy or Language program includes Reading, Speaking, Writing (includes spelling), Viewing and Listening. Skills involved in the language program are essential to all areas of learning. English is taught through all subjects as well as during specialised lessons.
Health, Physical Education and Sport
This multifaceted program helps students develop positive attitudes towards their health and physical activity. It encourages them to make choices that contribute to living an active, healthy life. Our emphasis is on fitness and skills-based activities and includes some competition. Fitness is fostered through runs and health hustle activities. Sporting skills are taught through an introduction to the Active Australia program and organised team games. Visiting coaches enhance skills development in sports such as cricket, soccer, basketball, netball, gymnastics etc.
Languages Other Than English (LOTE)
Our LOTE program is delivered in a block around mid-year and has a strong focus on students understanding and appreciating the diversity of cultures, languages and traditions that are represented in our local community, across Australia and throughout the world.
Mathematics
The program is taught sequentially from Kindergarten to Year 6. Within each year level there is the opportunity for children to be involved in extension activities or be provided with additional assistance if required. Written materials are supplemented with mathematical construction and counting materials and practical mathematics activities.
Science
Arawang provides a variety of investigative and interactive learning experiences. The program seeks to develop the student's understanding of the physical and biological world, and their place in the world.
Studies of Society and the Environment
Students investigate the historical, cultural, social and environmental factors that shape their identity and society. Students are actively involved in clarifying and articulating attitudes, values and beliefs and developing competence to participate responsibly in society.
Technology
This area develops students' ability and confidence in designing, making and evaluating the human environment. Through the integration of theory and practice and the use of materials, information and equipment, students will acquire the capacity to construct and reconstruct the designed world in ways which extend their physical and intellectual and sensory capacities.
Assessment and Reporting
The progress of children at Arawang is assessed throughout the year. Please click
