Support Programs

School Counsellor

The school counsellor is an important member of our school community and joins us for approximately 1.5 days per week. The counsellor is available to support a range of needs related to learning, behaviour and access to specialized support. The counselor is a very good contact for parents who have concerns about learning, teaching, family issues, student behaviour, social issues and other matters. The counselor can be contacted through the school office: telephone 6205 6877.

Learning Support

Our Senior Reading Skills Program is designed to meet the needs of Year 5 and 6 students who need additional support in the acquisition of literacy skills. A Learning Advancement Teacher assists class teachers with enrichment programs and supports students with special needs.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

A specialist teacher assists small groups or individual students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Enrichment Opportunities

Class programs provide enrichment opportunities for more able students. In addition to this, students are extended by representing the school in activities such as Rostrum, University of NSW Maths and Science Competitions, Creative Writing Competitions (Canberra Times, NestlŽ, Dorothea MacKellar); and Art and Design Competitions. Teachers at Arawang actively seek opportunities for enrichment and encourage student participation.

Parent School Partnerships Initiative (PSPIProgram)

The PSPI program aims to involve the parents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students in decisions that affect their children's schooling. A Commonwealth Government (DEETYA) grant provides funding for a variety of activities to improve educational opportunities for ATSI students. The grant also funds a successful Aboriginal Awareness Program for all students in the school.
